Repeal Of Regulations Regarding Wearing Of Masks
For the first time in over two years, South Africans can now appear in public places without wearing a face mask.
According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), there has been a decline in the number of reported COVID-19 cases and hospitalisations.
The reproductive rate of the virus, positive test rate and reported deaths have all similarly declined.
The Minister of Health, Dr. MJ Phaahla, on Wednesday night, repealed the regulations that were promulgated on 4 May 2022 in their entirety.
In summary, this means that:
- As from Wednesday, 22 June 2022, South Africans no longer need to wear a face mask in public places, whether indoors or outdoors or on public transport.
- The restrictions relating to gatherings were repealed. As such the number of guests attending a wedding or a funeral is no longer restricted nor the number of spectators at a stadium.
- Travellers to South Africa are no longer required to present proof of vaccination and/or a negative PCR test.
South Africans who travel abroad will still be required to comply with the regulations of the country of destination.
The above mentioned is a summary of the repeal of the regulations. Government intends to unpack the regulations in detail in a media briefing on Thursday, 23 June 2022 at 11h00.
The present stance of the government is in line with international trends. However, the government can reimpose the wearing of masks, should there be a resurgence in COVID-19. So, it might be advisable to keep your masks handy.
